Diane Way
was born in Montreal in 1958. She spent much
of her youth “kicking around” that
culturally rich city. For a young artist, Montreal
was a wonderful source of artistic nourishment.
As a child she spent summers at her family cottage
at Lake Simcoe, north of Toronto. That’s
where she first discovered doodle pads and filled
the long summer days with sketching. Her passion
for art had begun.Diane moved to Jasper in 1980
and discovered a wonderful contrast in scenery
as well as lifestyle from the city life she
had known. She then spent over two decades experiencing
much of what the mountain culture had to offer.
“I think of Jasper as my home town. I
moved here when I was twenty-two. I raised my
children in Jasper—the heart and soul
of our family still rests in these mountains.
The years in Jasper have been my formative years.”
Jasper inspired her to put paint to paper and
visually narrarate mountain life as it unfolded
around her.
Diane tries to invite the viewer into her watercolor
paintings and feel the ambiance of the scene
by blending loose atmospheric washes with more
representational renderings.
