JENNIFER (JENNY) ANGUS
Biography: Jenny is an emerging artist with a studio practice of drawing and painting in both pen/inks and oil paints. She graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 1990 with a specialization in editorial illustration and from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts in 1994. A freelance artist for the last seventeen years, she has sold commissioned art pieces as well as teaching painting in various media to both children and adults.
Statement: I like to paint in a couple of different mediums although oil paints are my first preference. Pen/inks are especially good for capturing the spirit or the moment whereas oil paints offer a depth of feeling not possible with inks. I am inspired to paint Coastal BC/Pacific scenes, as well as wildlife native to this region. I like to use a wide array of vibrant colours in my palette with pen/inks although with oil paints I prefer earth tones with hints of vibrant colours in the underpainting. Often I will use a dark coloured drying medium with oils as a method to enhance the earthy style of a painting.
I strive for strength of line and brush stroke as well as strong drawing technique underneath my paint. I try to lure the viewer into the picture itself and make them wonder what is around the corner or behind that door. Sometimes I challenge myself with issues of perspective in order to broaden the scope of a painting. Currently, I am exploring and developing more creative approaches to oil painting BC landscape while playing with different textures and shapes in the compositions.
